Ongoing Research: Access

  • Exploring shellfish harvesting accessibility in Maine’s municipal shellfish ordinance laws (Charles Van Damme, Megan Lacey, Findley McLain, and Sophia Hoag of Bates College) [need to figure out how to link]- In spring of 2022, students from Bates College worked with members of the Maine Shellfish Learning Network to investigate the ways in which access to licenses is restricted in municipal ordinances across the coast with specific attention given to residency requirements and definitions. Students combed through each of the 75 municipal shellfish ordinances in the state and assigned each municipality a grade which corresponds to the restrictiveness of residency requirements/ definition. This work can be used to better understand how residency requirements and definitions are contributing to limited access to harvesting licenses.
