Elomocokek

Elomocokek (mudflats) are important spaces within Maine’s coastal regions, as mudflats shape cultural, economic, and ecological values for coastal communities. The term elomocokek or mudflat in the Passamaquoddy-Maliseet language is both a general term for mudflat and also compasses knowledge about specific areas by Motahkomikuk. In this section, we briefly describe intertidal ecosystems, shellfish species, and problems that are threatening the sustainability of the wild clam and mussel fisheries. We also provide links to other websites and supplemental information with the hope that these pages provide another step in the journey of learning the values and vitality of mudflats.
